After the strongest East Coast earthquake in 100 years struck New York and surrounding areas, seismologists warned that more aftershocks could continue throughout the week. cbs news the report said.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has issued an alert that the ground shaking is not over yet.

Friday’s 4.8-magnitude earthquake caused no major damage or casualties, but more than a dozen aftershocks have since occurred at or near the epicenter.

As of Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey predicted a 60% chance of an aftershock of magnitude 3 or greater within the next week. fox news the report said.

If the time scale is extended to next month, the probability of an aftershock of magnitude 3 or above rises to 84%.

“While aftershocks are concerning in the first 24, 36, 72 hours to about a week, the entire East Coast is a seismically active area,” said Dax Soule, a seismologist and assistant professor at Queens College.

How to stay safe during an earthquake?

  • Take shelter under some sturdy furniture, such as a table or bed.
  • Protect yourself by crouching and covering your head and face.
  • Stay away from glass, windows or anything that could fall.
  • Stay indoors until the shaking stops and do not run outside, as reports show that most injuries occur when people try to leave the building.
