A man and woman have been arrested on suspicion of murder after human remains were found in a London park.

The Metropolitan Police said a 44-year-old man and a 48-year-old woman were arrested after human remains were discovered at Rowdown Fields in Croydon on Saturday. Both men remain in police custody.

An autopsy will be performed on Sunday.

A murder investigation was launched after police received reports of possible human remains in the park just after 9am on Tuesday.

Detective Inspector Martin Thorpe, of the Specialist Crime Command, who is leading the investigation, said: “I understand this discovery will cause great concern for local people and I would like to thank the community for their patience.

“I can confirm that our work at the site has been completed and we believe the remains found are those of a single individual.

“While we are currently unable to formally identify the victim, my team are working around the clock to achieve this. Their inquiries have made significant progress and I will provide a further update as soon as possible.

“We are in touch with our partners and local community members. I am grateful for their support.”

Anyone with information that may assist the investigation but who has not yet contacted police is asked to call 101 quoting reference number 1656/02Apr.
