New Delhi:

The State Bank of India on Tuesday evening submitted data on electoral bonds to the Election Commission of India following a stringent Supreme Court order. Following the court order, the polling group will compile and release the data by 5pm on Friday. However, the bank’s chairman and managing director is yet to file an affidavit confirming compliance with the court order.

New Delhi TV has learned that the affidavit has been prepared but has not yet been submitted to the court.

The Supreme Court on Monday rejected a plea by the State Bank of India, India’s largest bank, to extend the March 6 deadline for releasing the data. A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud strongly condemned the bank’s “willful disobedience” to the order and warned it of contempt proceedings.

“While we do not intend to exercise contempt jurisdiction at this time, we serve notice to SBI that if it fails to comply with the timelines set forth in this order, this court may be inclined to proceed against it for willful disobedience,” the court said. express. explain.

The bank argued that it took considerable time to collect, cross-check and publish the data, which was stored in two “silos” to maintain confidentiality between the parties. “We need more time to comply. We were told this should be a secret,” the bank said, giving it until June 30 to do so.

The deadline is well after the 2024 election.

In response, the Supreme Court noted that SBI Mumbai branch can provide donor details and the bank only has to “open the cover, verify the details and provide the information”. “We are not telling you to conduct a matching exercise. We are asking you to make a simple disclosure,” the chief justice told the SBI.

Last month, the Supreme Court handed down a landmark judgment that the electoral bonds scheme was “unconstitutional” and said it violated citizens’ right to information. The SBI has been directed to disclose the data by March 6 and the poll panel by March 13.
