Samsung appears to have moved ahead with its plans to produce a cheaper version of the Galaxy Fold, but launching a foldable phone at a lower price point could significantly cut costs. A news report this week claimed that the company may drop S Pen support on affordable Galaxy Z Fold 6 models.

The Advanced Fold does come with stylus or S Pen support, which makes Samsung’s foldable phone more functional than other brands in this segment. But the brand is likely to make more changes to the rumored device, which could include a less powerful chipset, less onboard storage, and even the camera will have a different sensor.

If reports are to be believed, these will be significant changes, but will allow Samsung to deliver a compelling foldable product that’s sure to turn everyone’s attention. According to another report, affordable Galaxy Fold models will also be part of the Galaxy A series, but we’d rather wait for more updates to really consider this possibility. The affordable model is rumored to launch later this year, alongside the Galaxy Z Fold and Flip 6 series.

Samsung has a huge first-mover advantage when it comes to foldable devices, and having a fifth-generation model should make a difference. But things are changing now, with more brands entering this space and offering better products in the market. Samsung could capitalize on the initial buzz by lowering the price range to get more people into the foldable ecosystem.

The lack of an S Pen might actually be a benefit to the company, as people would be more willing to see a foldable device used instead of a stylus. However, the main reason foldable devices cost so much is the screen, and the company has to make sure its display quality doesn’t suffer just because it wants to see cheaper foldable devices.
