Samsung has launched a new artificial intelligence (AI)-powered mobile app that can play an assistive role for people with speech impairments. The app is called Impulse and is compatible with Android smartphones and the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 series. The app uses a technique called rhythm therapy to help people find the rhythm of their speech and improve fluency. The Impulse app uses artificial intelligence capabilities for natural language processing to break words into syllables and convert them into vibrations.

The news was published by Samsung Spain Newsroom postalwhich reads: “Samsung Electronics Iberia and Cheil today announced the launch of Impulse, an artificial intelligence-based app designed to improve the daily lives of people with speech disorders such as stuttering.” The app was developed in partnership with the Speech Care and Stuttering Center Developed collaboratively to improve speech fluency.

Impulse essentially runs through the Galaxy Watch 6 series of smartwatches. The app uses natural language processing (NLP)-based algorithms to analyze words and convert them into rhythmic vibrations. Users feel these vibrations on their wrist through their smartwatch. Rhythm helps users understand the rhythm of each phoneme or word, depending on the type of speech disorder they have. Samsung says the technology helps them avoid wording problems and promote smooth speech.

Samsung revealed that the app has more than 250 rhythm and tone exercises designed to increase in difficulty as users progress through voice control. There are four modes with progressive difficulty settings, each with three levels of exercises to practice words or phrases.

The first mode is “Boost your voice”. Once configured it only takes one touch to activate. Users can choose the vibration mode they want, and it can be used normally after selection. It is activated when a blockage occurs in the mouth. The second mode is “Enhanced Rhythm”, which helps practice syllables. After the session, the app also displays a performance report that can be shared with the speech therapist.

The third mode is “Enhanced Tone”, which helps users practice the intonation of phrases. Finally, the fourth mode is “Enhance Your Speech,” which lets users practice their own text, writing directly in the app or by uploading a file with narration. Here, artificial intelligence analyzes the text to create vibration patterns.

Currently, the app is only available on the Google Play Store in Spain for smartphones running Android 10 and above. It’s unclear whether Samsung will expand the app to other regions as well.
