Sony is said to be developing a “Pro” version of the PlayStation 5, scheduled to launch later this year. Industry analysts said last month that a PS5 Pro with updated hardware features could be released before the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 in 2025. Now, a new report details the specifications of the upcoming console. Leaked information shows that in addition to graphics performance, the PS5 Pro will also have improved system memory and CPU clock speed.

Insider Game Report PS5 Pro’s system memory (576 GB/s) will be more efficient than PS5 (448 GB/s), with a bandwidth gain of 28%. The “Pro” version of the console will reportedly feature the same eight-core AMD Zen 2 CPU as the PS5, but will feature a “high CPU frequency mode” with a clock speed of up to 3.85GHz, a 10% improvement over the PS5’s 3.5Ghz.

“In high CPU frequency mode, more power is allocated to the CPU and the GPU clock frequency will be reduced by approximately 1.5%, resulting in approximately 1% reduction in GPU performance,” the report states.

The new leak also hints at audio enhancements for the PS5 Pro, claiming that “ACV in PlayStation 5 Pro runs at a higher clock speed than the standard PlayStation 5, resulting in a 35% improvement in ACM library performance.”

The report also claims that the PS5 Pro will come with a removable optical drive (the same as the slim version of the standard PS5) and 1TB of storage.

Last week, documents were leaked from the PlayStation Developer Portal disclose PS5 Pro will also receive GPU improvements. According to the leaked information, the new console will render 45% faster than the PS5 and feature “2-3x ray tracing (4x in some cases).” The PS5 Pro will also reportedly have three times the computing power of the PS5 – 33.5 teraflops of single-precision computing power, compared to the PS5’s 10.28 teraflops of single-precision computing power. For context, the Xbox Series X is claimed to be the most powerful console currently available, with 12 teraflops of computing power.

Sony has yet to announce plans for a PS5 “Pro” version, but the company launched the PS4 Pro about three years after the original PS4 was released in November 2013. Therefore, the PS5 Pro should be released sooner rather than later. Sony did launch a thinner, lighter version of the PS5 last November with slightly more internal storage and a removable optical drive. The PS5 slim retains the processing power, graphics capabilities, and pricing of the original console.

Last month, industry analysts claimed that Sony was preparing to launch the PS5 Pro in the second half of 2024 to boost console sales, after the company’s earnings call revealed that Sony would miss its fiscal 2023 PS5 sales target. Analysts believe Sony intends to have the updated console ready ahead of the expected release of Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto 6 sometime in 2025. Since its launch in November 2020, PS5 has sold more than 50 million units.
