Sainsbury’s has issued an emergency recall of its own brand almond flakes due to salmonella contamination.
Customers are being warned not to consume the 200g packs of Sainsbury’s almonds and are asked to return the product to the store where they will receive a full refund.
A statement from the Food Standards Agency said: “Salmonella has been found in the above products.
“Symptoms caused by Salmonella often include fever, diarrhea and abdominal cramps.”
Symptoms of salmonella usually appear within a few days after eating the food that caused the infection, but it can take up to several weeks.
A Sainsbury’s spokesman said: “Sainsbury’s is recalling the above product. Point-of-sale notices will be posted in stores where the product is sold.”
The batch codes of the recalled almond slices are 4044 and 4045, and the shelf life is February 2025.
This ingredient is often used in cakes, curries or as a decoration.
In 2022, a salmonella outbreak infected around 57 people in the UK, mostly young children, linked to Kinder Surprise eggs.
More cases caused by eggs produced in Belgium have been recorded across Europe, including in Ireland, France, Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands.
