The IPL 2024 match between Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals was disrupted on Thursday due to confusion over the rules of the tournament regarding the use of foreign players as substitute fielders. DC head coach Ricky Ponting and director of cricket Sourav Ganguly spoke to the fourth umpire when RR decided to field Ravman Powell as a substitute fielder. RR started three overseas players – Jos Buttler, Shimron Hetmyer and Trent Boult – and decided to bring Nandre Berger as their impact player instead Heitmeier.

However, controversy erupted when they brought in Rovman Powell as a substitute fielder, with the DC camp pointing out that this meant RR ended up using five overseas players in the match.

Let’s see what the IPL rules say——

Rule 1.2.5Each team is not allowed to name more than 4 overseas players in the starting eleven for any match (as per IPL player regulations).rule

Rule 1.2.6In any game, a team may not have more than 4 overseas players on the field at any time. Therefore, if a team names up to 4 overseas players in the starting lineup, the overseas player may play as a substitute outfielder only if the player being replaced is an overseas player. If there are less than 4 overseas players in the team’s starting lineup, overseas players can only play as substitute outfielders, but doing so does not mean that the total number of overseas players representing the team will exceed 4.

Riyan Parag scored 84 runs off 45 balls as Rajasthan Royals defeated Delhi Capitals by 12 runs.

After dispatching the batsmen, Parag hit 7 fours and 6 sixes to record his highest IPL score while RR recovered from 36 for 3 in the eighth over to bowl a challenging 185 points for 5 shots.

In reply, opener David Warner smashed a 34-ball 49 but DC crumbled under the pressure and the bowlers showed composure.

Tristan Stubbs (44 not out) had a try of his own but it was too little, too late.

Nandre Burger (2/29) and Yuzvendra Chahal (2/19) took two wickets each. Avesh Khan (1/29) also gave a good performance.

Earlier, Parag shared a 54-run knock with Ravichandran Ashwin, who hit 3 sixes and scored 29 runs off 19 balls. Parag also shared 52 runs with Dhruv Jurel (20 runs) and 43 runs with Shimron Hetmyer (14 not out).
