'Misleading': Rail after X user shares video of overcrowded trains

A user on X shared a video of an overcrowded Kashgar Express train

New Delhi:

A user of Weibo site

User Kapil claimed that the crowds had reached “one of the finest compartments” of Indian trains.

“Only First AC is left to be destroyed,” he said on Friday, while re-sharing a video from April 14 showing an overcrowded Kashi Express plying between Mumbai and Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh .

The video, originally shared by a passenger on the train, shows people blocking access to the restrooms and standing at the entrance and exit doors.

“The air conditioning of the train is not working properly due to the open doors,” he claimed and tagged Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, urging him to take necessary action.

However, the Railway Ministry on Saturday responded to Kapil’s tweet and shared a “video of the carriage showing up” showing “no overcrowding”.

“Please do not tarnish the image of Indian Railways by sharing misleading videos,” the ministry said.

In response, the user pointed out that the ministry shared today’s video to “claim that what happened on April 14 is misleading.”

Railways to operate record summer train journeys

The Ministry of Railways said on Friday that train frequency this summer will increase by 43% compared with last year to ensure that more passengers can travel to their desired destinations.

In a press statement, the Ministry of Railways said that to ensure passenger convenience and cope with the expected surge in travel demand during the summer, the Ministry of Railways has operated a “record” 9,111 flights this season.

“This marks a significant increase compared to summer 2023, when a total of 6,369 trains were offered. This represents an increase of 2,742 trains and reflects Indian Railways’ commitment to efficiently cater to passenger demand.”

Of these 9,111 trains, Western Railway will operate the maximum number of trains (1,878), followed by North Western Railway (1,623). Other railway zones that will run a large number of services include South Central Railway (1,012 services) and East Central Railway (1,003 services).

All regional railways across India are ready to operate these additional flights to cater passengers from Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh States, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Delhi,” the ministry said.
