“Political parties focus on the candidate’s ability to win among the youth”: Sachin Pilot to NDTV

Congress MP Sachin Pilot today explained why India’s political system does not give much space to youth in electoral politics, saying it was a matter of “political reality”. He told a youth conclave on New Delhi TV that ultimately it was the voters who were not treating the country’s youth fairly.

“Political parties say they are going to promote young people…(but) every political party does what the people want and in fact very few young people win elections…so parties are choosing candidates At the time, the focus was on the ability to win rather than on young people,” said the 46-year-old, who entered politics at an early age and became the country’s youngest member of Congress at the age of 26.

“It takes time to bring about change. Women make up half the population, but their numbers are small,” he added, pointing to another anomaly in the country.

But winning the election “is just the beginning,” Mr. Pilot warned. An MP or MLA should also be able to do the job. What’s more, “it’s easy to win the first time, but it’s a challenge the second time,” he added.

But even so, things are changing in India and abroad, he said. Capable young people have entered the political arena and performed their duties correctly.

“Now I see student politicians are playing a major political role… If we give young people a platform, the results will show in the long run. They will be able to contribute. This is not limited to politics, But in every field “including the arts world or the corporate world. Encouraging young leaders should be our collective effort,” he said.
