Policeman killed in shootout at Jammu and Kashmir hospital

Srinagar:

A gunfight broke out at the Government Medical College in Kathua, Jammu and Kashmir, in which a gangster was shot dead and a policeman was injured, police said. Sub-inspector Deepak Sharma was seriously injured after an encounter with gangsters on the medical college campus last night. A special police officer was also injured in the conflict.

According to reports, members of a gang called Shunoo Group, allegedly led by Vasudev, were being hunted by a police team. The gangster drove into the medical school campus and was surrounded by police.

In the ensuing encounter, one of the gangsters was shot dead. Sub-Inspector Sharma was shot in the head and was seriously injured. After initial care in Kathua, the injured police officer was shifted to Pathankot in Punjab. He died this morning, officials said.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha paid tribute to the officer. “I salute the valor and indomitable courage of PSI Deepak Sharma who made the supreme sacrifice while heroically fighting and neutralizing one of the most wanted gangsters in Kathua “His supreme sacrifice will forever be etched in our hearts. Deepest condolences to the family of martyr Deepak Sharma,” he said.

Mr Sinha said every drop of blood of the fallen officers would be avenged. “The nation stands with the families of the martyrs and @JmuKmrPolice whose dedication, resilience and courage in facing various challenges and adversaries continue to inspire us. Every drop of blood of our martyrs will be avenged and we are committed to creating a world without The feared Johnson & Johnson,” he said.
