Police called Lewes prison saying multiple inmates were suffering from “food poisoning”

Several prisoners at Lewis Prison are believed to have become unwell after suffering food poisoning.

The incident occurred at the Category B prison near Brighton, East Sussex, on Thursday, with some prisoners being taken to hospital for treatment.

Around six people are believed to be unwell, but the total number affected has yet to be determined.

The inmates are believed to have all eaten the same meals and none are in life-threatening or serious condition, according to officials.

HMP Lewes is not on lockdown and it is understood the incident is not believed to be drug related.

A spokesman said nearby Eastbourne District General Hospital was temporarily “prepared to receive possible casualties” but has since been closed.

Sussex Police confirmed in a brief statement that they were assisting the ambulance service after reports of a medical incident at the prison at around 12.30pm.

A spokesman for East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service also confirmed the service had been asked to assist and was “currently working with other agencies and specialist teams”.

East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust said: “Eastbourne District General Hospital is likely to receive casualties following an incident at HMP Lewes earlier today.

“We have now been suspended. Hospital care has not been affected and continues to operate as usual.”
