Pawan Kumar, son of poor farmer, fulfills his UPSC dream, ranks 239th

Pawan Kumar, the son of a poor farmer, grew up in a mud hut in extreme poverty.

Pawan Kumar’s home is now packed with well-wishers. Past the tricolor fixed to the facade, a narrow passage leads to a small courtyard. Six cows are tied up under a thatched shed, trying to resist the summer heat. The space was not huge but it was enough for the crowd that gathered to greet the soon-to-be IAS officers.

Mr. Kumar, who hails from a humble village in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, has achieved his UPSC dream by ranking AIR 239 in the Civil Services Examination.

The son of a poor farmer, he grew up in a mud hut in extreme poverty. With an asbestos roof above his head, he had every reason to fight and write a new story of perseverance for the young people of Raghunathpur.

His father Mukesh Kumar wanted him to find any job that would help him run the family, but Pawan had only one dream – to become an IAS officer and help people in his village.

“He wanted to be an IAS (officer) since childhood. I often asked him to find a part-time job. But he used to tell me not to disturb him. He didn’t have any hobbies except studies,” his father said.

Even the best minds find the UPSC exam difficult, but for any student seeking a career in administrative services, the UPSC exam is the way to go. Mr. Kumar also failed the exam twice, but he kept trying until he got the results he wanted. On his third try, he passed with flying colors.

The family owns four farmlands and a thatched house. His father supported the family by working as a laborer. Pawan Kumar worries about this extreme poverty. He wanted to escape his family’s poverty, and he knew education was the only way out. According to his sister Goldie, he only studied when he was at home.
