Parineeti Chopra on working with Diljit Dosanjh in Chamkila: “I was a student before him”

Actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh on Thursday said he was initially skeptical about being a part of Imtiaz Ali’s Hindi film Amar Singh. Flashy Because he felt that the director would not be able to do justice to the life story of the late revolutionary Punjabi singer.

In the Netflix film, Dosanjh plays the title role and Parineeti Chopra plays Amarjot. Dosanjh said that before Ali approached him for the film, he was already a part of a Punjabi film titled Jodi, which revolved around the life story of Chamkila and Amarjot. The actor said that unfortunately the film could not be released due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“When I came to know that a film on Chamkila is being made in Bollywood (Hindi), I wondered what kind of film they would make.

“When I got a call from Imtiaz sir, I thought he would sue us because he has the rights (of Chamkila’s story) and we don’t. But he said, ‘I want to cast you for the film. ‘ “We already have the story. If you still think you want to make a film with me, we will see,” Dosanjh said at the Next on Netflix event here.

However, Dosanjh’s impression changed after he heard the script of Ali’s film and he was amazed by the director’s attention to detail.

“I thought I knew a lot about Chamkila before I met her (Ali). When I heard her perspective, it was completely different. It was a huge thing for us that her story was being told on such a large scale.” When sir offered me the film, I surrendered to his vision,” he said.

Ali, known for films like When we met, Love Aaj KalAnd Rock Starsaid that he was keen to explore the story of Chamkila, whom he called a “superstar singer”.

The director said, “What I liked about Chamkila is that he is a grassroots superstar and his songs are sung even today. He is very popular and he was a grassroots artiste. We felt that we should A film should be made on him.”

Composer AR Rahman and lyricist Irshad Kamil have contributed to the soundtrack. Amar Singh shined. Dosanjh and Chopra have sung songs in the film.

Rahman said that it was his “dream” to compose music for a film that dealt with Punjabi music.

“It was a longtime dream of mine to do a Punjabi music film. When they approached me, they already had Chamkila’s songs in the film, and I said, ‘The songs are already made, so what will I do?’

The music director said, “Both Parineeti and Diljit have sung the songs. We put our take on the film and made it a musical. Some parts are like a Broadway musical where our characters are talking about Chamkila.”

Rehman, who has worked with Ali Highway, Rock StarAnd pageantHe believes that the director has reinvented himself with the upcoming film.

Dosanjh said that he is happy with the way the music of the film has been composed.

“I was wondering how they will score the music of the film, but when you have AR Rahman, Mohit Chauhan and Irshad Kamil ji (it’s great). Chamkila’s songs are in Punjabi but other songs are also playing in the background. In Hindi. We have the original songs of Chamkila,” he said.

Dosanjh also praised co-star Chopra for portraying the character of Amarjot well.

“Then I was wondering who would play the role of Amarjot, because she would sing more difficult than Chamkila. But when she said, Parineeti ji… I have heard her songs… but singing like Amarjot is a different thing.” And he did very well,” he said.

Chopra said that she learned a lot from Dosanjh while working on the film.

“When I signed this film, it was really a dream role. Before shooting this film, I thought that I speak good Punjabi and I can sing good songs. Then I met Diljit ji, I The reality was revealed in both the departments. I was a student before Diljit.

“I used to check my pronunciation with Diljit. (That) whether I am pronouncing the word correctly or not, or how should I do it? The biggest challenge for us was that we should not sing like us. Had to try to sing Amarjot and Chamkila,” he added.
