Actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh on Thursday said he was initially skeptical about being a part of Imtiaz Ali’s Hindi film Amar Singh. Flashy Because he felt that the director would not be able to do justice to the life story of the late revolutionary Punjabi singer.

In the Netflix film, Dosanjh plays the title role and Parineeti Chopra plays Amarjot. Dosanjh said that before Ali approached him for the film, he was already a part of a Punjabi film titled Jodi, which revolved around the life story of Chamkila and Amarjot. The actor said that unfortunately the film could not be released due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“When I came to know that a film on Chamkila is being made in Bollywood (Hindi), I wondered what kind of film they would make.

“When I got a call from Imtiaz sir, I thought he would sue us because he has the rights (of Chamkila’s story) and we don’t. But he said, ‘I want to cast you for the film. ‘ “We already have the story. If you still think you want to make a film with me, we will see,” Dosanjh said at the Next on Netflix event here.

However, Dosanjh’s impression changed after he heard the script of Ali’s film and he was amazed by the director’s attention to detail.

“I thought I knew a lot about Chamkila before I met her (Ali). When I heard her perspective, it was completely different. It was a huge thing for us that her story was being told on such a large scale.” When sir offered me the film, I surrendered to his vision,” he said.

Rahman said that it was his “dream” to compose music for a film that dealt with Punjabi music.

“It was a longtime dream of mine to do a Punjabi music film. When they approached me, they already had Chamkila’s songs in the film, and I said, ‘The songs are already made, so what will I do?’

The music director said, “Both Parineeti and Diljit have sung the songs. We put our take on the film and made it a musical. Some parts are like a Broadway musical where our characters are talking about Chamkila.”

Dosanjh said that he is happy with the way the music of the film has been composed.

“I was wondering how they will score the music of the film, but when you have AR Rahman, Mohit Chauhan and Irshad Kamil ji (it’s great). Chamkila’s songs are in Punjabi but other songs are also playing in the background. In Hindi. We have the original songs of Chamkila,” he said.

Dosanjh also praised co-star Chopra for portraying the character of Amarjot well.

Chopra said that she learned a lot from Dosanjh while working on the film.
