The Pakistan Cricket Board has decided to appoint Mohammad Yusuf and Abdul Razak as interim head coach and assistant coach respectively for the home T20 series against New Zealand later this month. The decision comes as negotiations continue with foreign coaches Gary Kirsten and Jason Gillispie over the long-term coaching position. A reliable source on the board said that while talks with Gillispie are nearing completion as he has agreed to take over as head coach in the red-ball format, discussions with Kirsten are yet to be finalized as he is busy with the Indian Super League league.
“Gillispie has agreed to certain conditions regarding his expenses and the number of days he will stay in Pakistan,” the source said.
He said the former Australian fast bowler will be available after the T20 World Cup when Pakistan resumes World Test Championship matches against Bangladesh, England and South Africa.
If all goes to plan, Kirsten will be the new white-ball coach.
Sources said that since the five-match T20 match against New Zealand will begin on April 18, the board decided to let Yusuf and Razak coach the team.
The futures of bowling coaches Umar Gul and Saeed Ajmal are yet to be determined but they are most likely to be part of the support team.
Yusuf and Razak are also members of the board’s new search committee.
The PCB has now also published a recruitment advertisement for the position of assistant coach.
The plan is to integrate assistant coaches with Kirsten and Gillispie, who will be the bridge between the support teams in both formats.
The PCB also conducted interviews for the first time for the post of Pakistan team manager.
