Pakistan may be headed for a pending verdict, with former prime ministers Nawaz Sharif and Imran Khan both claiming victory. The country’s electoral commission has yet to officially announce the results. Analysts had predicted there might be no clear winner.
Sharif said he would discuss forming a coalition government with other parties as his party failed to win an outright majority on its own. Khan, a popular former cricketer who voted from prison, said in a “victory speech” that his party-backed Independence Party was on track to win more than 170 of the 264 seats in the polls. The majority is 133.
Pakistan held elections on February 8 amid a blackout in mobile services.
