‘Our party will win all seats in Kashmir and Indian bloc will grow’: Farooq Abdullah

After Peoples Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti expressed dissatisfaction with the National Conference’s decision to contest from all three Lok Sabha constituencies in Kashmir, National Committee Chairman Farooq Abdullah on Saturday said both parties were in the Indian alliance part. He claimed that his party would win all three seats in Kashmir for the alliance.

Mehbooba Mufti on Friday said the National Council’s decision was “disappointing” and “a setback to the hopes of the people of J&K”. She also accused the NC of reducing the People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) to a “joke”.

“India is for everyone. India is not Pakistan. The framework of the Indian Constitution is that we are all one. What does it matter what religion you follow, what language you speak and your culture? This is a united India,” he said.

The National Council has announced that the party will contest three seats in the Kashmir Valley and asked the Congress to contest two seats in the Jammu region. The party also said that NC and Congress will select unanimous candidates for the Ladakh seat.

Jammu and Kashmir has five Lok Sabha seats while Ladakh has one. In the last elections, the NC won three seats in Kashmir, while the BJP won two seats in Jammu and the only seat in Ladakh.

Speaking at the PAGD, Ms Mufti said on Friday it was “difficult to see unity break down”.

Asked about the formation of Pakistan’s new government and its likely approach towards India, Abdullah said on Saturday that Islamabad must decide whether it wants peaceful relations with India.
