The Karnataka general election will be held in two phases on April 26 and May 7.

The Election Commission on Saturday said it seized Rs 613 crore in cash in the 24 hours ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, taking the total cash seized in Karnataka to Rs 15.78 crore since the Model Code of Conduct came into effect in March. 16.

The Karnataka general election will be held in two phases on April 26 and May 7, involving 28 constituencies.

According to EC officials, since the MCC came into effect, flying squads, static surveillance teams and police authorities have seized Rs 1,578 crore in cash, freebies worth Rs 1.73 crore, 7.41 lakh liters of liquor worth over Rs 2,337 crore, 6,634 kg of narcotics Substances worth over Rs 65 lakh and precious metals worth over Rs 43 crore.

They also registered 496 FIRs regarding seizure of cash, liquor, drugs, precious metals and freebies, while 72,627 weapons were stored, 836 weapons were seized, 8 weapons licenses were revoked and 4,175 were registered with the CrPC prevention department cases, of which 4,826 were restricted.

The excise department has registered 552 heinous cases, 430 cases of violation of license conditions, 29 NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act) cases and 1,815 cases of Section 15 of the Karnataka Excise Act, 1965 A further 329 vehicles of different types were seized in cases under section (a).

The Karnataka Chief Electoral Officer’s Office said in a statement that Rs 5.36 crore was seized by the police in the Bengaluru Rural Assembly constituency. It also seized 203 kilograms of sandalwood worth over Rs 30 lakh from Bellary Assembly constituency.

Meanwhile, nearly Rs 1.6 million in cash was confiscated from Mysuru Assembly constituency and Rs 2.6 million from Bellary Assembly constituency.
