Data center operators Equinix and Nvidia said Wednesday they have partnered to offer the chip firms’ supercomputing systems to corporate customers.

The service will make it easier for companies to own artificial intelligence computing systems and have better control over their data, rather than renting Nvidia’s market-leading chips from cloud computing providers like Amazon.com or Microsoft.

Many large businesses have expressed interest in owning their own AI computing systems for privacy and security reasons, but Nvidia systems are different from traditional data center servers, which often use separate networking cables and require liquid cooling.

Under the deal, Nvidia has trained Equinix staff to build and run its systems. Corporate customers would buy Nvidia systems but pay Equinix to build and run them efficiently while retaining ownership.

“We want to increase privacy because we’re hearing from large customers that they are very concerned about controlling their own destiny,” John Lynn, executive vice president and general manager of data center services at Equinix, told Reuters in an interview.

However, “then being able to figure out how to operate (an AI data center) efficiently and effectively – that’s a completely new set of capabilities that aren’t generally available.”

Nvidia and Equinix said the new offerings were available starting Wednesday, but did not disclose any immediate customers.
