According to data from India’s Union Ministry of Health, in 2022, an average of at least 2,200 people died from cancer every day in India, including about 235 deaths from lung cancer alone.

Data shows that in the 10 years starting from 2013, 2022 will be the year with the highest cancer mortality rate in India. Of the 2,200 deaths reported daily in 2022, 320 were from Uttar Pradesh, followed by Maharashtra (183), West Bengal (172) and Bihar (166).

India’s Ministry of Health cited data reported by the National Cancer Registry Program as showing that 808,000 people died from cancer in India in 2022, of which 85,221 died from lung cancer. Five states – Uttar Pradesh (1.16 lakh), Maharashtra (66,879), West Bengal (62,652), Bihar (60,629) and Tamil Nadu (50,841) – account for approx. 45% of total cancer deaths in India.

Data from India’s Ministry of Health analyzed by News18 shows that in the 10 years between 2013 and 2022, about 72.52 million people died from cancer in India – about 2,000 people every day and 83 people every hour.

Of the 2,000 deaths, half were concentrated in six states – Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Bihar, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

The annual estimated mortality rate from cancer cases continues to rise in India. The annual number of cancer-related deaths in India increased by 25% between 2013 and 2022, from 645,000 to 808,000.

Of the 7.252 million people who have died from the disease, about half (3.653 million) were from just six states. Uttar Pradesh (10.52 million), Maharashtra (600,000), West Bengal (5.63 million), Bihar (5.39 million), Tamil Nadu (4.53 million) and Karnataka Bang (442,000) consistently ranks among the top six.

Between 2013 and 2022, approximately 290 people died from cancer every day in Uttar Pradesh, followed by Maharashtra (165) and West Bengal (155).

The ministry also said that the estimated incidence of cancer cases in India continued to increase from 13.92 million to 14.61 million between 2020 and 2022.

To control the situation, the Ministry of Health said the country has launched a population-based initiative to prevent, control and screen common non-communicable diseases (diabetes, hypertension and common cancers). Under the initiative, people above the age of 30 will be targeted for screening for three common cancers: cervical, breast and oral cancer. Screening for these common cancers is an integral part of the services provided by Ayushman Arogya Mandir.

“Other initiatives to create public awareness about cancer and promote healthy lifestyles include celebrating National Cancer Awareness Day and World Cancer Day and using print, electronic and social media to create community awareness. Additionally, FSSAI also promotes healthy diet. Fitness India Movement It is implemented by the Youth Affairs and Sports Ministry and various yoga related activities are conducted by the Ayush Ministry.”
