Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez criticized La Liga for not adopting goal-line technology after his team lost 3-2 in Sunday’s El Clasico and Real Madrid on the brink of the title. Lamine Yamal’s shot, which Barcelona said went over the line but was not deemed a goal because officials could not prove the use of VAR, left the coach furious. With the score tied at 1-1, Yamal deftly fired a corner kick towards goal, with Real Madrid goalkeeper Andre Lunin pushing the ball to safety, presumably after it had crossed the goal line.

“It’s a disgrace,” said Xavi, who complained that technology used in other top leagues, including the Premier League, was not available in La Liga.

“If we want to be the best league in the world we have to progress in that sense and you have to put in the skills.”

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen agrees with his coach.

“It’s disgraceful for football, I have nothing to say,” the Germany international said.

“There is so much money in the world but not enough money to do the most important things.”

Jude Bellingham’s late winner left champions Barcelona 11 points behind Real Madrid with six games remaining.

“(Madrid) have an extraordinary league, they’ve only lost one game and they’re almost over,” Xavi admitted.

“I feel like we’re playing a normal game and we’re going to win.

“We played well and I think we deserved the three points.”

Xavi’s counterpart Carlo Ancelotti said he was delighted Madrid beat Manchester City on penalties to reach the Champions League semi-finals on Wednesday and scored a late El Clasico winner.

“I’m very proud because these were two very demanding games,” the coach said.

“Now we have to prepare for the final part of the season, but we are ready.”
