Mahima Chaudhry made a stellar debut opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Pardes. Her performance won widespread acclaim. Winning the Filmfare Award for Best Debut further cemented her place in the industry. Mahima subsequently appeared in several famous films such as Dil Kya Kare, Dhadkan, Daag-The Fire, Dil Hai Tumhara, Yeh Tera Ghar Yeh Meraa Ghar and Baghban. While some of these films were successful, others failed to sustain her initial stardom, causing her career to gradually decline.

She was last seen on screen in 2016’s Dark Chocolate, after which she took a break from the industry for nearly eight years. However, Mahima is set to return to the big screen with Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency and Signature.

In an interview with Hindustan Times, Mahima Chaudhary sheds light on the evolution of Bollywood, especially regarding the treatment of female stars. She expressed her belief that the industry is moving towards empowering female performers, allowing them to make decisions, get big roles, demand better pay and gain recognition. She points to the resilience of contemporary female actors compared to the past.

Mahima looks back at Bollywood during her prime and reveals the dark side of the industry, highlighting how actresses are affected by regressive norms. Filmmakers often seek out actresses who are considered “virgins” and have not been in a relationship. Any deviation from this image, such as dating or marriage, will result in their dismissal from the industry. Mahima stressed that marriage or motherhood can actually end an actress’ career.

Apart from professional challenges, Mahima also faced personal turmoil after she was diagnosed with cancer in 2022, which was publicly announced by veteran actor Anupam Kher. Mahima underwent treatment in Mumbai and was frustrated that she was unable to find a job as the treatment resulted in hair loss.

Mahima Chaudhry’s journey reflects the highs and lows of the Bollywood industry, showcasing its glitz and dark realities.
