Reliance Retail Managing Director Isha Ambani stunned everyone at the Met Gala 2024 in a Rahul Mishra couture sari gown that was hand-embroidered and custom-crafted by some of the finest needleworkers in India.

The intricate and detailed work of the gown was completed using appliqué and embroidery techniques like Dabka, Zardozi, Nakshi and Farisha. According to stylist Anaita Shroff Adajania, who is also Isha Ambani’s designer, a part of the gown also included French knots.

“Together, all of these elements hold a powerful narrative about the state of the planet and convey a message of hope and rebirth. Supporting hundreds of local craftsmen and weavers, Rahul Mishra’s ateliers in several Indian villages combine to create stunning looks. It was hand-embroidered,” she added.

Isha Ambani accessorised her outfit with Viren Bhagat’s nature-inspired jewellery, which included a flower choker, parrot earrings and traditional lotus hand bracelets (hathpocha). She also had a handbag that was made by Swadesh using miniature painting and other Indian art forms like carving.

The peacock, the national bird of India, is featured in a small but intricate painting on a clutch bag. The creator of the painting is Jaipur-based artist Hari Narayan Marotia.
