A shooting occurred when a New York City subway train entered the Mount Eden Avenue subway station in the Bronx, killing an innocent bystander and injuring five others, including two teenagers.
At least 10 shots were fired at Mount Eden Avenue station on Monday night (local time) after a fight broke out between two groups of teenagers on a train. Police and witnesses said the shooting caused “utter chaos” inside the police station.
No motive for the shooting was revealed.
Broadcasters broadcast a major emergency response from the Mount Eden Avenue elevated subway station in the northern Bronx, 9 miles (14 kilometers) north of Times Square in Manhattan.
Police detectives and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were at the scene conducting fingerprint searches after the shooting.
“We are on scene with an ongoing investigation at the Bronx (Subway) Mount Eden Avenue station. Please avoid the area…use alternative routes and anticipate traffic conditions in the area,” said NYPD Deputy Commissioner for Operations Katz Kaz Daughtry said on social media.
Mass shootings are common in the United States, where there are more guns than people and about one-third of adults own a gun.
Polls show a majority of Americans favor tighter gun controls, but the powerful gun lobby and mobilizing voters who support the country’s strong gun-rights culture have repeatedly blocked lawmakers from taking action.
New York has a lower homicide rate than many major U.S. cities, and it is illegal for civilians to possess guns in public in almost all circumstances.
