New iPhone update iOS 17.5 beta 2 brings Web Distribution to EU developers – what it means

Apple has launched iOS 17.5 beta 2, bringing new Web Distribution sideloading functionality to EU developers. This comes after Apple recently announced this feature to provide developers with additional distribution options under the Digital Markets Act.

Web distribution: a new approach for EU developers

Web Distribution allows developers in the EU to make their applications available for download directly from their own websites. This new feature is a third distribution option for developers in the region, joining the App Store and other available platforms.

To take advantage of Web Distribution, developers must opt into Apple’s new App Store terms of business. This includes a core technology fee of €0.50 for the first annual install exceeding 1 million in the past 12 months. Additionally, apps distributed over the web must comply with Apple’s notarization guidelines and can only be installed from website domains registered in App Store Connect.

Apple’s commitment to user safety

In a statement on its developer website, Apple emphasized its commitment to user safety and platform integrity. The company will provide developers with API access to facilitate network distribution, integration with system functionality, and backup and recovery options for users.

When users first download an app from a developer’s website, they encounter a series of screens explaining what it means to grant the developer permission to install the app. After Face ID authentication, users will go through a three-step installation process, during which Apple’s notary system will provide clear information about the app, including its name, developer, description, screenshots and system age rating .

Simplify application installation

One noteworthy aspect of this new feature is that users only need to grant app installation permission once per developer. For example, if Meta adopts Web Distribution for its applications in the EU, users only need to approve Meta’s ability to install the application on their devices once. Subsequent applications installed from Meta will not require additional permissions.
