Nagaland group decides to boycott Lok Sabha polls on separate state

Assembly elections will be held in Nagaland on April 16.

The Eastern Nagaland People’s Organization (ENPO) has demanded a separate government or state consisting of Nagaland’s six districts, but still stands by its decision not to contest elections for Nagaland’s lone Lok Sabha seat until the Center meets its demands. .

ENPO leaders again announced a boycott of the state’s April 19 parliamentary elections on Friday after holding a marathon closed-door coordination meeting with 20 provincial councilors and various other organizations in Tuensang on Thursday.

A coalition of East Nagaland legislators comprising 20 MLAs had earlier asked ENPO to reconsider its decision.

The “public emergency” in eastern Nagaland that started on March 8 will continue.

During the “state of public emergency”, ENPO, the apex body of the seven Naga tribes in the region, and its front organizations did not allow any campaigning.

ENPO, the apex Naga body in six regions and its associated organizations, in support of its separate national demand, had called for a boycott of last year’s assembly elections (February 27) but later withdrew this on the assurance of Union Home Minister Amit One appealed to the Shah.

Responding to ENPO’s request, the Union Home Ministry last year formed a three-member committee headed by Adviser, Northeast, AK Mishra to study their demands. The team visited Nagaland several times and held talks with all parties.

Nagaland Chief Minister Nefiu Rio recently said that the state government has proposed to the center to establish an autonomous region for the people of the eastern region.
