An IPL contract may be at the top of a cricketer’s wish list, but Mumbai junior Ranji Trophy hero Musheer Khan is happy he went unsold in last year’s player auction as it gave him more time to ‘understand’ T20 Format. The 19-year-old became Mumbai’s youngest batsman to hit a century in the Ranji final, surpassing the record of the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, and he is confident of being there in due course. Make your mark in the IPL.

“My name is not in the IPL. But I am not disappointed. My father told me to play Test cricket and play for the Indian team. The IPL will eventually happen, if not today, then tomorrow,” recalled Musheer The words of his father and growth coach Naushad were told to PTI Video at the time.

“I have one more year to prepare for the IPL, which is good. I will learn more about T20 cricket and how I should prepare for this format,” Musheer, who has played just five first-class matches so far explain.

Most recently, Mushel scored 136 in the second innings of the Ranji final against Vidarbha, helping Mumbai set a massive target of 538. Ultimately helping Mumbai win a record 42nd title in the Ranji Trophy.

Understandably, Mushel took inspiration from his elder brother Sarfaraz, who made his debut for India in the third Test against England in Rajkot last month.

“I’m really inspired by my brother because of his dedication and the way he bats. Our batting styles are similar. He told me before the match (Ranji final) to treat it like a A normal game, don’t take too much pressure.” “From the outside, it might feel like a normal game, but on the court, we felt the pressure on the court. He told me to back up my technique and follow process,” he added.

Musheer was also the highest run-scorer at the ICC Under-19 World Cup earlier this year, scoring 200 runs. Mushir was delighted as Mumbai won the Ranji Trophy after eight years.

“We have won 42 titles and that is a matter of pride. Many great players have played here (for Mumbai). I am very proud that I have played for Mumbai and won titles.

“I would also like to thank the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) and congratulate them as they have provided us a lot of support. I hope they continue to support us in the same way,” he said.

The classy right-hander praised veteran pacer Dhawal Kulkarni, who retired after the Ranji Trophy final.

“His support for Mumbai cricket, what he did for Mumbai, was unbelievable. His speech before the final was a real motivation for all of us.

“This is his last game. We are excited and we want to win the trophy as a gift to Dhawal bhai. We want him to go away happy. He took the last wicket of the game (Vidarbha) and everything It’s perfect,” he noted.
