IPL 2024: CSK beat MI on Sunday©AFP
Sunday’s IPL ‘El Clasico’ had a clear winner – Chennai Super Kings, with Mumbai Indians finishing second. The long-awaited clash has it all. The young players performed very well, MS Dhoni ended the match for CSK with 20 runs off just 4 balls, Rohit Sharma scored big but in the end CSK emerged victorious. Another recurring thing is the crowd booing Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya.
Cricket greats such as Sunil Gavaskar and Kevin Pietersen criticized his captaincy. Although MI lost the game, they still had ample chances to qualify for the playoffs. However, they will not get a chance to avenge CSK in the league stage of IPL 2024. The reason is that the two teams are placed in different groups.
Mumbai Indians are in Group A along with Rajasthan Royals, Kolkata Knight Riders, Lucknow Supergiants and Delhi Capitals. Chennai Super Kings are in Group B along with Sunrisers Hyderabad, Gujarat Titans, Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
According to the 2024 IPL format, teams in the same group will compete twice, home and away. In addition to this, the team will also play four games at home or away against teams from other groups. They play one of five teams, playing home and away games.
With this draw, Mumbai Indians will face off against Chennai Super Kings only once in the 2024 IPL stage. Therefore, it is impossible for Mumbai Indians to take revenge in the league stage.
However, if both teams advance to the playoffs and meet again, it will be MI’s chance for revenge.
