Messi will miss Argentina’s upcoming friendly in the United States due to a hamstring injury, the Argentine Football Federation confirmed on Monday. The Inter Miami superstar was due to feature for the world champions in a friendly against El Salvador in Philadelphia on Friday before taking on Costa Rica in Los Angeles on March 26. However, the 36-year-old Argentina captain is yet to recover from a strained hamstring. Last week, Miami defeated Nashville 3-1 in the CONCACAF Champions League.
Messi was substituted after halftime in the win over Nashville and missed Miami’s win over D.C. United in Washington on Saturday.
“Argentina captain Messi suffered a minor hamstring injury in his right leg against Nashville and will therefore be unable to participate in the friendly match in the United States,” the Argentine Football Association said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Miami head coach Gerardo Martino hinted Messi might miss March’s international games after his team’s victory over Washington on Saturday, saying the team wanted to ensure he was available for next month’s CONCACAF tournament Champions League quarter-finals.
“Obviously the goal is for him to be able to play in the quarter-finals of the CONCACAF Champions League. We are not taking any risks,” Martino said.
