State security adviser Kuldeep Singh said Myanmar-based terrorists were likely involved, but there was “no evidence” yet.

The incident occurred a day after two police personnel were killed and six others were injured in an attack by armed assailants in Tengnoupal on Wednesday morning.

Senior police officials said that at around 2 pm on Thursday, armed miscreants killed four people in Ningthong Kha Khunou of Bishnupur district. The deceased were identified as Ningthoujam Nabadip (40), Oinam Bamonjao (63), Oinam Manitomba (37) and Thiam Somen (56).

Protests were held in many parts of the entire northeastern state on Thursday. according to a Indian Express According to the report, before Wednesday’s attack on police personnel in Moreh town, an intelligence report suggested that insurgents might attack security forces, including “security forces from Burma”.

In a separate incident, 23-year-old Meitei, identified as Takhelambam Manoranjana, was killed in an exchange of fire between armed rural volunteers at Kangchup in Imphal West district.

Police said the body of a man who was “likely to have been killed in a shootout between armed miscreants” was recovered in Kangchup late on Wednesday night.

Apart from the incidents of violence, miscreants also attempted to loot weapons from police establishments in Thoubal district of the valley on Wednesday night and three BSF jawans sustained bullet injuries during the encounter. The mob targeted the 3rd Indian Reserve Battalion at Khangabok in Thoubal and the Thoubal police headquarters.

Manipur’s security advisor Kuldeep Singh said there were some intelligence reports about “insurgents operating in Moreh”.

“Since yesterday (Wednesday) morning, a large number of Kuki terrorists started firing on police commandos at three places in Moreh. There was already an intelligence report that PDF rebels operating in Moreh and perhaps some additional troops from the Burmese side might also attack the state forces,” Singh quoted Indian Express That being said.

“The intelligence was there for a few days, because Kuki Impi and CSOs (civil society organisations) and many others were coming to the security places in Moreh and they were saying that the CDOs (commandos) should be removed from there. If the CDOs are not transferred, the CDOs will be targeted, (the groups said),” he said.

Singh further said that the current locations of the three state police commandos were making them unsafe targets, hence the decision has been taken to shift them.

Manipur has been rocked by ethnic violence since May 2023, in which more than 180 people have died.
