A man has been charged with manslaughter over the death of a woman following an altercation outside a hotel on the Isle of Man.

Isle of Man Police said “an argument broke out” outside the Palace Hotel on Douglas’ Central Promenade at around 9.20pm on Friday.

Jillian Hughes, 57, visiting from Merseyside, was involved in the incident and later died in hospital.

John Meadows, 53, of Verney Crescent, Allerton, Merseyside, was later arrested and charged with manslaughter in relation to her death. He appeared at Douglas Court on Monday and was remanded in custody until his next court appearance on April 9.

The court heard the pair had been visiting the island with their families.

Detective Superintendent Stephen Maddox, who is leading the investigation, said Ms Hughes’ family were being supported by officers “at a very difficult and sad time”.

He said in an update on Sunday: “I would like to thank the public for their help on this matter.

“Following my appeal yesterday a number of witnesses came forward and I encourage others who have not yet come forward to do so as well.”
