Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday lashed out at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, saying the Trinamool Congress chief has no intention of stopping infiltration as the infiltrators coming in are vote banks .

“…Mamata Didi will not stop infiltration as these infiltrators are her vote bank. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP government can stop the infiltration into Bengal,” Shah in West Bengal He said this while addressing a public rally in Bandak Sindhi Najpur.

This marks Amit Shah’s first visit to the state after the election dates were announced.

Citing the example of Assam, which conducted a nationwide citizen registration drive to identify illegal immigrants entering the state, the Union Home Minister said the BJP government in the neighboring state was free of infiltration.

“Assam is also facing a similar problem of infiltration. The people of Assam voted the BJP to power and no one can enter Assam from its borders. We are free from the problem of infiltration,” Mr Shah said .

Asking people to vote for the BJP so that the party wins 30 of the 42 seats in West Bengal, Shah promised: “I come and tell you, if you let us win 30 seats in Bengal and form the BJP government, then even if a bird will cross the border and land here, no infiltrator will come in.”

Talking about the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) rules recently announced by the central government, Shah said Mamata Banerjee had misled people on the controversial law.

“I appeal to the people of Bengal with folded hands. We have passed a law called CAA. Mamata Didi is misleading the people of Bengal by saying that if you apply, your citizenship will be cancelled, ” said the federal minister.

Mr. Shah further said, “I am here to tell you today that all refugees who come here should apply without fear and no case will be filed against anyone. This is the law of the Modi government and no one can Make any changes…”

Slamming Mamata Banerjee government for allegedly welcoming Rohingya migrants into her state, Amit Shah said: “She (Mamata) welcomes Bengali infiltrators and Rohingyas, but But mislead Hindu, Sikh and Buddhist refugees. You will not succeed. PM Modi has notified CAA rules.”

The West Bengal chief minister has booked the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for conducting a raid in Bhupati Nagar without prior notification to the local police, with the Union minister claiming Banerjee wanted to protect the accused.

West Bengal will go to polls in all seven phases of the Lok Sabha elections starting from April 19. The counting of votes is scheduled for June 4.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the TMC won 34 seats in the state, while the BJP won only 2 seats. The CPI(M) won 2 seats while the Congress won 4 seats. However, the BJP’s performance in the 2019 polls improved significantly, winning 18 seats while the TMC won 22 seats. The Congress fell to just 2 seats, while the BJP won 2 seats. The left wing scores empty.
