Maharashtra's Alibaug renamed as Maynaknagri: Speaker says

Maharashtra Speaker Rahul Narvekar urges state government to rename Alibaug as ‘Maynaknagri’

Mumbai:

Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar urges the state government to rename Alibaug as ‘Meynak Nagri’ in honor of Menak Bhandari, who served as Jat Rapati Shivaji Maharaj played a vital role in the naval prowess.

Alibaug, a coastal town near Mumbai, is a tourist attraction and municipal council in Raigad district of the state.

Mr Narvekar made the demand after a delegation from the All India Bhandari Federation met him recently and made a request for a name change.

Mr Navekal wrote to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Thursday stressing that coastal security and coastal warfare were crucial to prevent foreign invasion during the reign of Maratha warrior king Shivaji important.

“Shivaji Maharaj laid the foundation for a strong navy, led by Maynak Bhandari of Konkan. Due to the valor of Maynak Bhandari , after a hard battle, the British had to retreat from the fort at the port of Khanderi-Underi at Alibaug,” he wrote.

Mr. Narvekar also said that a statue of Mayank Bhandari should be erected in Alibaug.

A delegation from the All India Bhandari Federation, led by Navinchandra Bandivdekar, met his request, the spokesman said. “These requests are reasonable and I urge the government to investigate,” Naweka said.
