Police on Sunday arrested Maharashtra Youth Congress chief Kunal Raut for allegedly defacing a poster of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Nagpur, an official said.

Officials from Sadar police station said the incident took place near the Zilla Parishad office on Saturday. Kunal Raut is also the son of former state energy minister and Congress leader Nitin Raut.

He said the Youth Congress leader and some others allegedly defaced a poster of Prime Minister Narendra Modi with black paint, erased the words “Modi Sarkar” on it and wrote “Bharat Sarkar” Saka”.

Raut was arrested on Sunday afternoon from Kushi town, about 40 km from Nagpur, the official said.

However, a Congress leader claimed that Raut was arrested suddenly.

He said a notice under Section 41-A of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) was issued to Youth Congress leaders through WhatsApp on Sunday, directing Raut to appear before the police on Monday noon. But he added that he was detained on Sunday.
