Pune:

Five people may have drowned after entering a biogas pit in Maharashtra’s Ahmednagar district on Tuesday, police said.

An official said the incident took place at night in the village of Wakdi in Tessir, Nevada state.

He said a cat fell into a pit and a man climbed down to save it but became trapped in the mud inside.

“In order to rescue him, five other people climbed down one after another and were also trapped inside,” said Dhananjay Jadhav, a police officer at Nivasa police station.

He added that a rescue team equipped with a suction pump had arrived at the scene and one person had been rescued while the search for five others was still ongoing.
