Leo Varadkar to resign as Taoiseach ahead of election: report

Indian-origin Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar has decided to resign ahead of the general election, it was reported on Wednesday.

The 45-year-old will also step down as leader of Fine Gael, according to the BBC. A formal announcement is expected on Wednesday.

Varadkar came to power in 2017 and is Ireland’s youngest Taoiseach (Taoiseach).

However, Varadkar’s resignation as leader of the three-party alliance does not automatically mean a general election. He may be replaced by a new leader of Fine Gael.
