JoJo Siwa has been facing backlash online since releasing her new song, Karma.
Particularly criticized were her comments about revolutionizing music by introducing a new genre called “gay pop”.
Social media users were quick to point out that JoJo was blatantly ignoring the countless trailblazing artists who came before her, such as Freddie Mercury, Elton John, Lil Nas X, Troy Sivan, Sam Smith wait.
Amid strong opposition, the former dance moms star clarified her initial comments in an interview Sirius XM and Mack & Jen come to Miami 1.
“So, here’s the thing. Gay pop, right, is something people do, but it’s not an official musical genre,” she noted, further clarifying that while it is one that has been around for decades style, but it has not been officially recognized.
As such, she just wants to see a “literal” category for queer pop music, “rather than just ‘Oh, I’m a gay pop artist.'”
JoJo, born Joelle Joanie Siwa, also responded to the online hate she’s been receiving since entering the new “era.”
“I could say I want world peace, but everyone would say, ‘How dare you want world peace?'” she said, dismissing the backlash.
She continued: “It’s kind of crazy. People ask me all the time, and they’re like, ‘Do you feel like you have to be really careful about what you say?’ And I’m like, ‘No, because no matter what I say, it’s going to go down,’ ”
