External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday visited Sailani Avenue, named after Indian-origin soldier Nain Singh Sailani who fought in the First World War Sacrificed his life while serving in the Australian Imperial Force. Jaishankar was here to attend the two-day Indian Ocean Conference.
“Visited Sailani Avenue in Perth. Named after Nain Singh Sailani, an Indian-origin soldier who was honored in Australia. Great to meet some of our veterans and Indian community leaders there.” Posted by Jaishankar on X .
Records show Serani worked as a laborer before joining the Australian Imperial Force in Perth on 7 February 1916.
Shimla-born Nain Singh was assigned to the 44th Infantry Battalion of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (Anzac) as a soldier at the age of 43.
He was one of 12 known Anzacs from the Indian community who joined the Australian Imperial Force in 1916, and one of two killed in the German attack on Belgium during the First World War.
He was buried in Belgium with Australian soldiers killed in battle and was awarded three medals, including the British War Medal, the Victory Medal and the 1914/15 Star.
“It was great to meet some of our veterans and Indian community leaders there,” Jaishankar posted on X.
