Rome:
Italian fashion designer Roberto Cavalli died on Friday at the age of 83, news outlets said. His affinity for python print and ornate animal prints has made him a favorite of the international jet set for decades.
Italy’s ANSA news agency reported that the designer died at his home in Florence, the city where he was born, after a long illness.
He first appeared in the 1970s on stars like Sophia Loren and Brigitte Bardot, and over the years his skin-baring, eye-popping style remains a favorite of Kim Kardashian. Favored by subsequent generations of celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez.
Cavalli favored Ferraris, big cigars and custom-made shirts that were unbuttoned to expose his tanned chest. He’s married to a Miss Universe runner-up, owns a purple helicopter and a Tuscan vineyard, and hobnobs with Hollywood A-listers.
Born on November 15, 1940 in Florence, Italy’s premier leather processing center, Cavalli is best known for his use of printed leather and stretch sandblasted jeans.
In 2005, the designer was tasked with updating the Playboy Bunnies’ flimsy uniforms—and, as usual, he launched a leopard-print version.
