Israeli undercover agents, some disguised as medics, attacked a West Bank hospital on Tuesday and shot dead three Palestinian militants in the first such operation in eight years.

After the attack on Ibn Sina hospital in the northern city of Jenin, an AFP photographer saw a bullet hole in a pillow covered in blood as Palestinians gathered around the bodies of the victims.

The Israeli military said troops entered the hospital – a major medical facility serving the city of Jenin and its neighboring refugee camps – to combat the “Hamas terrorist organization”.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health announced that Israeli forces had killed three people inside the hospital, stressing that medical facilities enjoy special protection under international law.

“The Minister of Health urgently calls on the United Nations General Assembly, international agencies and human rights organizations to put an end to the series of crimes committed every day by the occupying forces (Israel) against our people and health centres,” a ministry statement said.

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry issued a statement on X (formerly Twitter), calling the “heinous” hospital killings a “crime against humanity.”

CCTV footage purportedly from the hospital and posted on Twitter by the Palestinian ministry showed armed men and women walking in corridors wearing medical uniforms or civilian clothes.

“A group of Israeli troops secretly entered the hospital and assassinated these people,” hospital director Naji Nazar told AFP. He said they used weapons equipped with silencers.

Inside the hospital, AFP photographers saw blood soaking cushions and chairs and splattering on the walls.

The official Palestinian news agency Wafa named the three as Mohammad Jaramna, Mohammad Ayman al-Ghazawi and Basel Ayman al-Ghazawi.

“The operation was performed in the rehabilitation ward of the hospital where Basel Ghazavi has been receiving treatment,” the hospital director said.

The Ghazavi brothers are claimed to be fighters by Islamic Jihad, while Hamas calls Jaramna the “commander” of its armed group.

The Israeli military accused the three men of being “terrorists” holed up in the hospital.

The military said Jaramna was involved in “significant terrorist activities” and was known to distribute weapons and ammunition used in shootings.

He was said to have been “inspired” by the October 7 attack by Hamas militants in Gaza, which killed about 1,140 people in southern Israel, most of them civilians, according to official AFP statistics.

The military said he “planned to carry out a terrorist attack in the near future and was using the hospital as a hideout and was subdued.”

Israel’s relentless military offensive has killed at least 26,751 people in Gaza, mostly women and children, according to the Health Ministry of the Hamas-controlled territory.

As the funeral procession carried the Gazavi brothers through the streets of Jenin, weapons were placed on their bodies.

Israel has occupied the West Bank since the 1967 Arab-Israeli War and has intensified its incursions into Palestinian towns since October 7.

Jenin has been the focus of numerous Israeli attacks, with troops destroying homes, tearing up streets and carrying out airstrikes.

Deadly attacks in hospitals are rare, although Palestinians often accuse Israeli forces of preventing paramedics from treating victims of the invasion.

The last one occurred on November 12, 2015, when undercover agents pretended to be leading a pregnant woman during a raid on a hospital in the southern West Bank city of Hebron.

They detained a Palestinian accused of stabbing and killing his cousin inside Al Ahli hospital.

Israeli forces and settlers in the West Bank have killed more than 370 people since the Oct. 7 attack that sparked a war between Israel and Hamas, according to the Ramallah Health Ministry.
