Israel fires on Gazans awaiting aid: Hamas kills 14, injures 150

Palestinian territories:

Israeli fires in the Gaza Strip killed 14 people and injured 150 others as they waited to receive aid, the Hamas-run health ministry said earlier on Friday.

The Defense Ministry said in a statement that 11 people were killed and 100 injured when Israeli troops fired on people who had gathered at a roundabout in northern Gaza City.

Mohammed Ghurab, director of emergency services at a hospital in northern Gaza, told AFP that “the occupying forces shot directly at people waiting for the food trucks.”

An AFP reporter saw several bodies and people who had been shot at the scene.

The Israeli army did not immediately comment on the claims when contacted by AFP.

The United Nations has warned that Gaza is facing famine. Israel has been besieging the Gaza Strip since Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on October 7.

The humanitarian emergency has prompted some countries to diversify aid supply routes, including airdrops and sea, as land access to Gaza via Jordan, Israel and Egypt remains limited, far beyond what aid agencies say is needed.

The war began on Oct. 7 when Hamas agents attacked Israel, killing about 1,160 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of official Israeli figures.

Agents also held about 250 Israeli and foreign hostages, dozens of whom were released during a week-long truce in November. Israel believes that approximately 130 prisoners remain in Gaza, 32 of whom are dead.

Israel’s retaliatory campaign of relentless bombing and ground operations in Gaza to destroy Hamas has killed at least 31,341 people, mostly civilians, according to the region’s health ministry.
