“Iron shields, jute sacks”: Farmers prepare as protest march begins tomorrow

Farmers started their march on Delhi on 13 February

New Delhi:

Farmers will resume their protest tomorrow after rejecting the government’s 5-year offer to buy three types of pulses, maize and cotton at the old MSP.

Iron shields and jute bags have been stored at the Shambhu border between Punjab and Haryana to counter tear gas shells as Delhi prepares for a fresh confrontation.

ID cards have been issued to media persons to prevent “undesirables” from joining the protests by posing as journalists.

The farmers said they would resume their march towards Delhi in a peaceful manner. “We want to appeal to the government not to use force against us. We want to protest peacefully,” the farmers told NDTV.

Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher said yesterday that this proposal is not acceptable to him. “The government gave the proposal (on Sunday night) and we have studied it. There is no point in implementing MSP only on two or three crops and leaving other farmers to fend for themselves,” he said. ,

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha – an umbrella organization of farmer unions that is not directly linked to those leading this round of protests – also criticized the proposal, calling it a “diversion from the core demands of farmers”.

The farmers, supported by around 200 unions, had started their march in Delhi on February 13. Tear gas and water cannons were fired against protesters gathered at the Shambhu border, and smoke canisters were also dropped from drones.

The demand for a law on MSP, which is meant to protect farmers from market vagaries, is the main issue for the protesting farmers. They are also demanding loan waiver, implementation of Swaminathan Commission recommendations, pension for farmers and farm labourers, withdrawal of police cases registered against them during earlier protests and justice for the farmers killed in Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh.
