International Cricket Confederation (ICC) Announces 2024 T20 World Cup Knockout Qualifying Day Cricket News

The International Cricket Council (ICC) board meets in Dubai this week and the future structure and context of international bilateral cricket is top of the agenda. One of the top decisions taken was to introduce stopping the clock as a mandatory match condition in white-ball cricket and the preliminary days of the knockout stages during the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup. Both the Board and the CEO Council held extensive discussions on this issue. The future structure of the competition, considering issues such as the larger context of international white-ball competition, the feasibility of scheduling windows and the commercial scheduling principles underpinning FTP.

ICC President Greg Barclay said: “ICC Board and Committee meetings are the forum where we discuss the long-term future of international sport and throughout this series of meetings we spend several hours constructively considering the future of global sport. Structure. Cricket Calendar.”

He added: “While there are no easy answers, we are committed to exploring how to provide context and will consider further options at an upcoming meeting.”

The board also confirmed that the stopping clock will become a permanent fixture in all ODIs and T20Is. The playing conditions for the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and the qualifying procedures for the 2026 tournament have also been approved.

According to the stopwatch rule being trialled in men’s white-ball cricket, the fielding side should start a new over within 60 seconds of the end of the previous over. An electronic clock counting down from 60 to zero will be displayed on the ground and a third referee will be responsible for determining the start time of the clock.

If the fielding team is not ready to throw the first ball of the next round within the allotted 60 seconds after the end of the previous round, two warnings will be issued. Subsequent violations will result in a five-point penalty per incident.

The results of the stopped-clock trial, which have been submitted to the Chief Executive Committee, indicate that around 20 minutes have been saved in each ODI match.

In view of the apparent improvement in the flow of matches, the CEC approved the introduction of the stop clock as a mandatory match condition in all men’s ODI and T20I matches between full members from June 1, 2024, including the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will have reserved days for the semi-finals and finals. In the group stage and Super Eight series, the second-batting team must bowl at least five overs to constitute a match, while in the knockout stages, at least Ten rounds are played.

The ICC Council also approved the qualifying procedures for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The tournament will be played between India and Sri Lanka and will feature 12 automatic qualifiers.

This includes the co-hosts and the top eight teams of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, with the remaining spots (2-4, depending on the host nation’s final ranking) to be filled by the second-placed team in the ICC Men’s T20I World Cup as of June 30, 2024 Daily ranking list. The remaining eight teams will be determined through regional qualifiers.
