Instagram nudity protection for DMs

Meta supports teenagers from sexual blackmail and abuse of intimate images by introducing new features on Instagram. Sextortion is an emerging scam that involves sexual extortion, threats, sharing of adult images, and more.based on metadata blog, the upcoming feature will make it more challenging for scammers and criminals to interact with and manipulate teenage users. Additionally, the company is developing new measures to support young people in identifying scammers and how to protect themselves. Currently, Instagram is testing nudity protection in DMs, which will strictly blur images if it detects nudity. This feature uses on-device machine learning to detect and analyze images sent in DMs on Instagram.

Meta emphasized that once the feature is fully ready, it will be enabled by default for users under 18 years old. For adults, a notification will pop up encouraging users to use the feature to keep themselves safe. Meta said, “Because images are analyzed on the device itself, nudity protection will also work in end-to-end encrypted chats, and Meta will not have access to these images – unless someone chooses to report them to us.” The tool predicts It will be launched next week to make the Meta platform a safer space for teenagers. Meta will also provide users with tips and support, such as Meta’s Safety Center, a support hotline, StopNCII.org for users 18+, and “Take It Down” for users under 18.
