The number of COVID-19 cases in India increased by 124 in a single day, taking the number of active infections to 1,508, the health ministry said on Tuesday. Karnataka reported one new death in 24 hours, according to data updated by the ministry at 8 am.
As of December 5, daily case numbers had dropped to double digits, but they began to increase amid the emergence of new variants and cold weather conditions. Official sources said that following December 5 last year, the maximum number of new cases in a single day on December 31, 2023 was 841, which was 0.2% of the peak cases reported in May 2021.
Of the total active cases, the majority (about 92%) are recovering in home isolation. “The data currently available indicate that the JN.1 variant will cause neither an exponential rise in new cases nor a surge in hospitalizations and deaths,” an official source said.
India has experienced three waves of Covid-19 in the past, with daily new cases and deaths peaking during the delta wave between April and June 2021. The peak reported in May was 4,14,188 new cases and 3,915 deaths in July 2021.
Since the epidemic broke out in early 2020, more than 450,000 people have been infected nationwide and more than 530,000 people have died in the past four years. According to the Ministry of Health website, the number of recoveries exceeds Rs 44 crore and the national recovery rate is 98.81%.
According to the website, the country has administered 2.2067 billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines so far.
