The 52-year-old tech tycoon, who will visit India this month, believes powerful countries are hesitant to relinquish power as he said it was “ridiculous” that India does not have a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
“At some point, the UN agencies need to be revised,” Musk posted on X, formerly Twitter, in January. “The problem is that those with excess power don’t want to give it up.
“It is ridiculous that India does not have a permanent seat on the Security Council despite being the most populous country on earth. In my opinion, Africa should also have a permanent seat.”
At a news conference on Wednesday, State Department principal deputy spokesman Vedant Patel emphasized the need for reform of U.N. agencies, including the U.N. Security Council, but added that he did not provide any specific details.
The UN Security Council consists of 15 member states, including 5 permanent members with veto power and 10 non-permanent members elected by the UN General Assembly for two terms.
The five countries with veto power include the United Kingdom, the United States, France and Russia.
India has been trying unsuccessfully for years to gain a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council. However, with many countries supporting the idea, it may eventually become a permanent member.
