Imran Khan party-backed candidate shot dead in Rawalpindi, Pakistan: report

Independent candidates backed by the PTI secured a majority of seats in the general election.

Former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) parliamentary affairs (MPA) MP Chaudhry Muhammad Adnan was arrested by unidentified persons in Rawalpindi, Dawn newspaper reported on Monday, citing Rawalpindi police. The attacker shot him dead.

According to reports, the leader contested the general elections as an independent candidate in the NA-57 and PP-19 constituencies of Rawalpindi.

According to a statement from Rawalpindi police spokesperson, the incident took place in the Civil Lines area in front of the City Police Office (CPO) office.

A police spokesman said Rawalpindi Chief Police Officer Syed Khalid Hamdani directed the Potohar police to immediately arrest the murderers involved.

Furthermore, senior police officers rushed to the crime scene after learning about the incident, according to the statement, adding that evidence is being collected and teams are being formed to nab the suspects.

“Based on a preliminary investigation, this incident appears to be a manifestation of a personal vendetta,” the statement said.

“The investigation is ongoing from all angles,” the statement said, adding that the culprits would be arrested and brought to court.

According to the official portal of the Punjab Assembly, Adnan is the son of Chaudhry Mohammad Jan and was born in Rawalpindi on February 15, 1976, Dawn reported.

He graduated from Punjab University and was elected as MPA in 2018. He subsequently served the country as Parliamentary Secretary for Social Welfare.

Adnan also served as Parliamentary Revenue Secretary from 2018 to 2020.

Dawn reported that two PTI workers were killed and 12 others injured in police firing during a protest demonstration in Alpuri, the district headquarters of Shangla, last week amid alleged manipulation of poll results.
