New York City police said on Monday that multiple people were shot at a subway station in the Bronx, with local media reporting that as many as six people were shot.
One person died from their injuries and five others suffered non-life-threatening injuries, the local ABC television affiliate reported, citing unnamed police sources.
An NYPD spokesman said they did not yet know exactly how many people had been shot or the condition of the victims. It was unclear whether the gunman was in custody.
The latest data shows that crime rates on New York’s subway system remain low: About 3.8 million people ride the system on an average weekday, and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority reported 570 felonious assaults throughout 2023.
Shootings are particularly rare: In 2022, a man armed with a handgun injured 10 people on a train passing through Brooklyn, the first mass shooting on the subway system since 1984.
Weeks later, in May 2022, a man shot and killed 48-year-old Daniel Enriquez on the Q train in what police said was an unprovoked attack.
In the early days of the pandemic, subway crime rates spiked in early 2020, heightening passengers’ concerns about how dangerous subways really were, but fell back to normal levels in 2021. Even when faced with a fall, passenger perception of danger remains high in crime rates.
Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat and former city police chief, has tried to calm uneasy commuters by increasing the number of police officers at subway stations.
