Rajnath Singh:

“There is no law and order in the state,” Rajnath Singh added.

Murshidabad (West Bengal):

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday slammed the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government over the law and order situation in West Bengal and said an atmosphere of anarchy prevailed across the state.

Addressing a public rally in Murshidabad, West Bengal, Rajnath Singh said: “The entire state of West Bengal has an atmosphere of anarchy and is known for crime. People like Sandesh An incident like Kali happened on the soil of West Bengal and I assure you that this time if the BJP government is formed here, we will see who dares to repeat the mistake of Sandesh Kali.”

“When the ED and CBI came here to investigate, they were attacked by goons. There is no law and order in the state,” he added.

Earlier today, West Bengal Opposition leader and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari on Sunday termed the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC party as a party that lacks support from the people thug party.

“TMC is a party of goons. TMC is not a political party…the goons and police are with them, not the people,” Mr Adhikari said.

Agnimitra Paul, the BJP candidate from Medinipore, had similar views and also accused the West Bengal chief minister of misusing the police and administration for political gain.

Ms Paul also said Mamata Banerjee’s strategy will not work and the BJP will do well in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. “Mamata Banerjee has only one weapon, the police and the government, with which she can work, but it will not work this time. The BJP will produce very good results,” she said.

Ms Paul added that people will respond to Mamata Banerjee’s dishonesty towards the people of Bengal and towards women after the Sandesh Khali incident.

“The way Mamata Banerjee has treated the people of Bengal and the dishonesty she has shown towards women after Sandesh Khali, we have seen and will continue to see… the youth of our society People have been victimized, jobs have been stolen and the people of Bangladesh have been harmed. “Bangladesh will respond to this,” she said.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has traditionally had a stronghold in West Bengal. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the TMC emerged as the dominant force, winning 34 seats in the state.

In comparison, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won only 2 seats. The Communist Party of India (M) and the Congress won 2 and 4 seats respectively. However, the political landscape has shifted significantly in the 2019 polls. The BJP won 18 seats, a sharp contrast to the previous tally.

TMC, although still in the lead, has been reduced to 22 seats. The Congress party’s representation was also reduced to just 2 seats, while the Left Front was unable to secure any seats.

The first phase of polling for Coochbehar, Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri assembly constituencies concluded recently. The BJP won all these constituencies in the last election in 2019. The turnout was high in all three constituencies, with 75.54% in Alipurduar, 77.73% in Coochbehar and 77.73% in Jalpaiguri The rate is 79.33%.

Polling in the remaining constituencies in West Bengal will be held on April 26, May 4, May 13, May 20, May 25 and June 1. Counting of votes will take place on June 4.
