Final year BTech student from Kota commits suicide, third death in 14 days

A final-year student of a commerce polytechnic allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan in his paid guest room in Kota, Rajasthan, police said on Friday.

The student, Noor Mohammed, took the extreme step sometime on Wednesday, but his body was found in his room in Vigyan Nagar area on Thursday night. Police said no suicide note was found.

This is the third suicide in Kota in two weeks. The 27-year-old student, a native of Gonda in Uttar Pradesh, was pursuing a bachelor’s degree in technology from SRM University in Chennai and was living as a paying guest.

DSP (Vigyan Nagar) Dharmveer Singh said Mohammed studied at a coaching institute in Kota between 2016 and 2019 to prepare for the entrance exam and after getting admitted to SRM University, he studied online courses at Kota PG.

On Wednesday, he likely committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan with a bed sheet.

The officer said that on Thursday night, a canteen boy noticed an untouched lunch box outside Mohammad’s room and informed the PG boss.

Singh said police were informed of the incident around 8pm on Thursday.

The body has been deposited at the mortuary for autopsy, he said, adding that the student’s family has been informed and they are on their way to Kota.

Three suicides have been reported in Kota so far this year.

On January 29, 18-year-old Niharika Singh, who was preparing for JEE, allegedly hanged herself at her home in this coaching center, leaving a suicide note apologizing to her parents and calling herself a failure By.

On January 23, 19-year-old Mohammed Zaid was found hanging in his dormitory room in Kota.

He came to the city from Moradabad district in Uttar Pradesh a year ago to prepare for the NEET medical entrance exam.

No suicide note was found in the case.

Last year, 26 students allegedly committed suicide in Kota, where children come from across the country to prepare for competitive exams such as the National Entrance Examination (JEE) for top engineering colleges.
